The bad news for Stevenson-that stars Tamika and Tauja Catchings would miss a North Suburban showdown versus Warren because of a death in the family-continued Tuesday when the Blue Devils upset the nation’s No. 1 team 49-39 in Gurnee.
Warren coach Bruce Campbell didn’t tell his players beforehand that the Catchings sisters weren’t playing.
“They have more than two players,” Campbell said. “We just played our game. All week long, I have been talking about patience and slowing the game down. We did that.”
Warren (18-3, 11-2) led throughout and was paced by Felicia Sartin’s 14 points. Julie Minuskin added 12 points and eight assists.
Katie Coleman topped Stevenson (23-2, 13-1) with 23 points, but the Patriots came no closer than seven points in the second half.
“Thank god it’s not a sectional game,” Stevenson coach Frank Mattucci said. “Warren took it to us in the second quarter and were much more aggressive.”
Elgin 68, St. Charles 50: Susie Smith’s (15 points) three three-pointers, and two by Kim Pompa, helped No. 5 Elgin (20-1, 12-0) shake off early foul trouble and remain unbeaten in the Upstate Eight. Rachel Voss also had 10 for Elgin, which is nearing the completion of its second season without a conference loss.
