For now, officials are unlikely to hire full-time firefighter-paramedics.
Mayor Jeff Schielke said it is not in Batavia’s best interests to change the way it provides paramedic service through the Fire Department.
“The program’s got a long way to go before we ever make any changes to what’s there now,” Schielke said. “It’s really a complicated issue.”
Like sister municipalities Geneva and St. Charles, Batavia contracts with the Tri-City Ambulance Board for two full-time paramedics subcontracted through a private company.
The city this year budgeted new funds to hire three additional firefighters.
