Homeowners will pay an additional 3 cents to throw out a bag of garbage following action by the City Council.

Aldermen approved allowing the city’s refuse hauler, Speedway Disposal, to charge $1.21 per garbage sticker, up from $1.18. The increase is being prompted by higher costs to dump trash at Settler’s Hill Landfill, according to city administrator Phil Page.

As part of its agreement with Kane County to operate the landfill, at Fabyan Parkway and Kirk Road, Waste Management increased the tipping fees paid by haulers to dump there.

The monthly cost of garbage pickup service to businesses and multifamily dwellings also increased under the new fee structure.

In other action, the council authorized the city attorney to draw up a contract selling a former well house and four parking spaces on the west side of City Hall to the Geneva Public Library for $50,000.

The library, which will pay for capping the well, needs the space to accommodate its expansion project, Page said.
