The police hope to add a patrol officer to their 27-member department next year using a federal grant under the crime bill.
The city is applying for $75,000 to hire the officer, who will be part of the department’s effort at community-oriented policing.
Lt. Joe Frega said the new officer, if the city obtains the grant, would be assigned to conduct educational programs and work with community-service organizations to help prevent crime.
Frega said the city will know by Feb. 1 if it will get the grant.
