A feast of words: When members of the Women’s Association at Hinsdale’s Union Church first talked about compiling a cookbook as a fundraiser, they didn’t realize it was the start of something big.
“We started out to build a Volkswagen and ended up with a Cadillac,” said Eleanor Patterson, coordinator of the year-long effort. “We sent out a call for people’s favorite recipes, and the response was overwhelming.”
Among the contributors is 11-year-old Greg Berns, who submitted Milk Fondue and Volcano Salad. There’s also a recipe for a Christmas Morning Wife Saver (if you play your cards right, some eager son-in-law will put the ingredients together on Christmas Eve while you’re reading to the family.) While it’s certain former President George Bush would despise the broccoli offerings (one appetizer, four salads, five casseroles), he might go for Elephant Stew (serves 3,800).
Illustrated by Dawn Parsons Feller, the 267-page spiral-bound publication is titled “Love Offerings Cookbook.” Priced at $12, it’s selling like hot cakes, according to Patterson.
