The village has delayed until January a hearing regarding a hotly contested development at Highland Avenue and 31st Street.

Trammel Crow Residential Inc., asked for and received a continuance until Jan. 16 to prepare additional information on the development, known as Highland Landmark, said Village Manager Kurt Bressner. The hearing had been scheduled for last Monday.

The proposed 436-unit town home and apartment complex is the target of a large-scale petition drive by the Citizens Action Committee, a neighborhood group that contends the development will increase crime and traffic and crowd local schools. At least 50 volunteers have been gathering signatures for the petition during the last several weeks.

Organizers hoped to garner at least 1,000 signatures and planned to present the petition to the village Monday during the hearing.

Both developers and village officials said the development will have no negative impact on the area or local schools.

Trammel Crow officials asked for the continuance, so they could complete a study of the noise impact of the East-West Tollway on the proposed site and examine a number of issues that will affect local schools, Bressner said.
