The owners of three downtown buildings have applied for more than $56,000 in city grants to improve the appearance of their structures.

Pending approval of the City Council, the grants would bring the total awarded this year under the facade-improvement program to more than $77,000.

The city will pay for 50 percent of any work up to $10,000. The city has budgeted $100,000 a year through the 1998-99 fiscal year.

The biggest of the new applications, $24,333, would go to the owners of the building at 10 State Ave., who plan to replace the building’s concrete panel front with brick and stone. The owners of the Arcada Theater and office building at 1st Avenue and Main Street have applied for $22,250 to replace third-story windows. The owners of Mountaintops camping-equipment store at 228 W. Main St. have applied for $9,647 for tuckpointing, paint and general repairs.

In September, the council awarded $21,000 to three buildings.
