To some inconsiderate people who don’t need them, bright blue handicapped parking spaces only mean a convenient space to park.
But now Naperville police and the National Handicap Assistance Program have begun a program designed to nail scofflaws who park in handicapped spaces.
Using volunteers, the NHAP will patrol parking lots. When volunteers spot law-breaking vehicles, they will alert police, who will issue tickets.
The patrols, which began Saturday, will be a periodic effort, volunteers said.
Police have traditionally issued tickets to able-bodied drivers who park illegally in handicapped spaces in city lots, but acknowledge that owners of private lots rarely call to complain.
Violators face fines of $50 if the tickets are paid within 15 days. If the tickets remain unpaid, the fine is hiked to $75, police said.
