`The Specialist,” starring Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone, overcame largely negative reviews to open in first place at the weekend box office with a gross of $14.3 million.
The romantic comedy “Only You,” the only other new film in wide release, premiered in third with moderate ticket sales of $5.7 million.
“The River Wild” fell from first to second, while “Forrest Gump” and “Jason’s Lyric” were both popular. In a limited national release, “The Shawshank Redemption” remained strong.
“Natural Born Killers” dropped out of the Top 10 after just seven weeks of release. In its second week, “The Scout” collapsed badly.
