For years, Mayor Jeff Schielke has been bombarded with letters and petitions from schoolchildren encouraging the city to attract a movie theater to town.

By next summer, the hundreds who wrote the mayor will get their wish. Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Goodrich Quality Theaters announced plans this week to build a 10-screen multiplex on Randall Road south of Fabyan Parkway.

“There is a strong desire in this town for just such a development,” Schielke said.

The nearest multi-screen theaters are in St. Charles and Aurora.

“This also demonstrates the city’s continuing commitment to making the Randall Road corridor a premier destination,” the mayor said.

Goodrich is proposing to build a 34,000-square-foot complex, housing 2,000 seats and employing four full-time and 50 part-time employees.
