Five youths from Waukegan were arrested after they allegedly attacked a 16-year-old Stevenson High School student, police said Wednesday.

One of the five youths, Denis McLain, 17, of 703 Linden Ave., was being held in Lake County Jail Wednesday on $100 cash bond for misdemeanor charges of battery and mob action, a jail supervisor said.

Also charged with battery and mob action in the incident were two brothers, Ulysses Craig, 18, and Shawnte Craig, 17, both of 419 Center St., police said. Both were released Tuesday after posting $100 bond, police said. Two minors were petitioned to Juvenile Court and released to the custody of their parents, officials said.

According to police, the incident occurred about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the high school, located at 1 Stevenson Drive.

Words were exchanged between the victim and the Craig brothers, apparently stemming from a verbal argument that took place about two weeks ago in a neighboring community, said Police Detective Greg Duffey.

“It appears to be an argument over an ex-girlfriend” of the victim, Duffey said.

The scuffle lasted for several minutes before school security and several students helped break it up, Duffey said. The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics for abrasions to the face and elbows, Duffey said.
