The Village Board has agreed to reconsider the Streamwood Park District’s proposal to build a community center on a controversial site.

That action came less than two weeks after the Village Board voted against the district’s proposal to build a 62,000-square-foot community center on nine acres near the corner of Parkside Circle and Park Boulevard.

District and Village Board officials have discussed how the original plans could be changed so a community center might work in the proposed location. Those changes probably would center on traffic flow, said district board President Kevin Carter.

But some nearby residents are still adamantly opposed to the proposed location, saying it would increase traffic down their two-lane, 25 m.p.h. streets and subsequently create a safety hazard for children playing in the area. Others expressed concern that gangs would hang out there at night, crime would increase in the area, and the community would lose simple winter pleasures when the sled hills are removed.

“We are not saying we don’t want this built,” said resident Annette Swoger, who said she has collected 88 signatures from other area residents opposed to the site. “We don’t want our sled hills ripped down, and we don’t want our neighborhood destroyed.”

A public hearing before the Plan Commission has been scheduled for Oct. 18. The issue will return to the Village Board Oct. 20.
