Two Lake County legislators say they will fight for changes in state law that would make it easier for law enforcement agencies to collect delinquent child support.
State Sen. Bill Peterson (R-Long Grove) said he and Rep. Bob Churchill (R-Lake Villa) have agreed to try to change administrative practices in state government, giving law enforcement agencies easier access to Social Security numbers and other information helpful in collecting overdue payments. If necessary, Peterson said, they will try to pass legislation.
Their decision came after a meeting Monday among state legislators, Lake County State’s Atty. Mike Waller, political candidates and members of a newly formed parents group. Francine Jones, a Round Lake Park resident, and other members of Parents United for Child Support requested the meeting to discuss ways of helping families collect back child support.

Jones said she thinks a new committee made up of the legislators and law enforcement officials will lead to reform.
“I want to believe they’ll work on this,” Jones said.
