A 29-year-old Aurora man led law-enforcement officers from five agencies on a 30-minute chase through the east side after a custody dispute threatened to become violent early Sunday, authorities said.

Arrested and charged with reckless driving, aggravated fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, and three counts of criminal damage to property was Guillermo Arias of 473 Wood St.

The Kane County sheriff’s office said the incident began shortly after midnight when Arias arrived at the home of his estranged wife’s mother in the 1200 block of 5th Avenue and demanded to take a 10-year-old daughter.

The mother-in-law refused and called the Sheriff’s Department. Deputies arrived and sent Arias away. A short time later, Arias phoned his mother-in-law to tell her he was coming back with a rifle and planned to take the girl by force, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies spotted Arias’ vehicle near Trask Road and Indian Trail, but the car sped away before being stopped. The ensuing chase involved squad cars from the Kane and Du Page sheriff’s offices, Aurora and Naperville police, and the Illinois State Police.

The chase ended about 1 a.m. when Arias’ vehicle became stuck in the mud as he attempted to drive across a cornfield at Liberty Street and Illinois Highway 59, north of the Fox Valley Mall, authorities.
