Fifty-three theater directors will showcase their wares in Bailiwick’s 6th annual Directors Festival, which kicks off next Sunday and continues through Oct. 27.

The festival at the Lakeview Performing Arts Center, 1229 W. Belmont Ave., will feature programs of three one-act plays-some shorter than 30 minutes, none longer than 50 minutes-that the directors have chosen, cast and designed. Each program will be performed once, with curtain time at 7:30 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and tickets priced at $8. (For more information, call 312-883-1090.)

Each week of the event will have a different theme, starting with “World Premieres and Visionaries of the Past,” and continuing with “American Writers,” “New Works and Unknown Treasures” and “Symbols and Absurdities.”

The Oct. 2 opener will showcase two world premieres: Carlos Tamayo directs “Memories of My Past,” an ensemble-generated piece about living and dying with gangs; Becky Brett directs “Captain Flywheel and the Produce Section,” an operatic musical about a grocery store superhero, by Ben Mueller and Mike Canter. In addition, Robin Caplik will direct the American premiere of “Emily Dickinson in Bandages,” Rane Arroyo’s personal, philosophic, humorous and erotic play about obsession.

“American Writers” week will feature the works of William Saroyan, Sam Shepard, Tennessee Williams, Eugene O’Neill, Israel Horowitz, Edward Albee and Arthur Miller.
