Best games: Bishop McNamara, a Kankakee school with only 490 students, just keeps on defeating foes with larger enrollements. The Fightin’ Irish, with a student body of Class 2A size but a 4A state football enrollment (that is based on its opponents’ average enrollment), knocked off 5A De La Salle 28-0 to take command of the the Catholic League South race. No. 2-ranked McNamara and De La Salle were rated the best in this division, with St. Rita a distant third. QB Ryan Spielman completed 13 of 29 passes for 161 yards and two TDs. . .TUNEUP: No. 5 Romeoville prepared for its SICA West showdown with Joliet next week by upending Lincoln-Way 31-21, as FB Justin Wooley, emerging as a late-blooming Division I prospect, rushed for 174 yards and three TDs. . .LIKE A NO. 1: Wheaton-Warrenville South regained the form that had the Tigers ranked on top until two weeks ago with a convincing 35-6 thrashing of No. 4 Wheaton North. With favorite target All-State WR Kasey Klaas (three catches, 77 yards) double-covered, QB Tim Lester found 6-7, 220-pound TE Devon Finn with an 11-yard TD pass and another 41-yard completion.
Shining stars: Let’s start out with two collective gold stars for outstanding defensive performances in a supporting role. Bishop Mac and Wheaton South’s units didn’t score the points, but they were responsible for huge victories. Bishop Mac’s defensive leaders were Peter Nolan, Frank Koranda (6-3, 265), Mick Handy and Todd Poole. They didn’t allow De La Salle a first down until the halftime band was about to take the field. Wheaton South, led by 6-3, 270-pound Larry Moeaki, 6-3, 225-pound Ron Grego, Thomas Proedehl, Todd Pritts, Jeremy Stoltz, Jason Skinner and Cory Johnson, limited Wheaton North star TB Steve Havard to 67 yards. Havard had rushed for 507 in his last two games. . .RUNNER OF THE NIGHT I: Jason Liska rushed for 222 yards and three TDs as Class 3A state-ranked Marian Central Catholic routed Grant 40-15. . . CATCH OF THE NIGHT: Kenny Carrington is quite a catch for any coach, and Richards coach Gary Korhonen is glad he has him. Carrington caught seven passes for 177 yards and three TDs in the Bulldogs’ 40-20 victory over SICA North contender Sandburg.
