Village officials have approved an ordinance that will allow them to acquire property through eminent domain, if necessary, to build a commuter train station.

Wheeling, which has never had its own commuter rail terminal, is expected to receive service from Metra in 1996. Trains will run along the Wisconsin Central freight line and serve an estimated 1,000 passengers daily round-trip from Antioch to Chicago.

The village is required to provide the land and build the proposed station. Metra will construct the platform, said Village President Sheila Schultz.

Meyer Material Service Corp. owns part of the land adjacent to Wisconsin Central on which the commuter station is proposed. The village and Meyer have been discussing the property buy.

Wheeling commuters have been required to use stations in Arlington Heights, Mt. Prospect, Northbrook or Glenview.
