The board of the beleaguered International Theatre Festival of Chicago met for several hours Tuesday, but a decision on restructuring the biennial event and its hefty debt was put off for at least a month.
Richard Gray, the festival’s chairman, said an ad hoc committee of the board will study “the new artistic model and a plan for dealing with the deficit,” which is believed to be about $500,000.
Chairing the committee are Bernard Sahlins and Thomas Heath. Sahlins is one of the three co-founders of the festival, along with his wife, Jane Nicholl Sahlins, and Bill Conner.
Jane Sahlins has been executive director since the first festival in 1986, but she plans to step down Jan. 1. Gray said the board hasn’t formally begun a search for her successor.
