A new parking law in the village apparently has made someone go through extraordinary lengths to become a thief.

After village commissioners approved an ordinance Sept. 5 banning parking along two sections of Oakwood Avenue near Pierce Downer School, village workers erected “No Parking” signs along the street to warn motorists of the 7 to 9 a.m. parking ban. But by Sept. 8, the signs-and their 7-foot poles-were gone.

“It couldn’t have been any small effort; they sunk those poles about 2 feet underground and it would require some real serious pulling to move them,” said Downers Grove Police Lt. David Rechenmacher.

Police later found the signs and poles in a yard. By Sept. 9, the signs had been posted again along Oakwood.

Four days later, however, police said the signs, valued at $300, had been stolen again. This time, they have not reappeared in a yard.

But taking the signs down won’t remove the ban. Officials said they will continue to post the signs again and enforce the ban in an effort to keep students safe at the nearby school.
