The filmmaking workshop, which seems to have become a rather common institution, will be given a different thrust in the next 10 days.
“Dream Screen,” a hands-on animation workshop for children, will be held Monday through Sept. 29 for 20 third-graders of the Sojourner Truth Elementary School.
The purpose of the workshop-to be given weekday afternoons at Cabrini Connections, 535 W. Chicago Ave.-will be to create an animated film that reflects the unique vision of children living in Cabrini-Green. The result will be presented at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival’s “Best of the Fest” at 4 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Harold Washington Public Library.

The workshop will be led by a team of animators and educators, who include Erling Ericsson and Elisabeth Lysander of the Swedish Film Institute, and Barry Young and Darryl Hughes of Columbia College. Ericsson and Lysander have conducted similar animation workshops for children throughout Europe and India. Young, an animator and teacher, has had long experience as chairman of the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival’s animation jury. Hughes, also a teacher, is a commercial animator and a volunteer for Cabrini Connections, which provides Cabrini-Green students with one-on-one tutor/mentors, role models and enrichment activities.
“This workshop is a natural extension of the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival,” says Elizabeth Shepherd, director of the festival, which will be held Oct. 7-16 at Facets Multimedia. “While the festival has long been recognized for bringing the talents of international children’s filmmakers to Chicago audiences, we now seek to bring the unique visions and voices of Chicago children to the attention of the world.”
