This fall, with all the hoopla over to-hide-or-not-to-hide-the-knee, you can ignore the trite and true hemline question altogether.

Instead, think pantsuits.

Don’t think polyester. Don’t think sternly tweeded and pinstriped Edwardian dandies. Don’t think boring.

There is certainly a place for the mannish fedoras, ties, shirts and vests that accompany the tailored trouser suits traditionally associated with menswear-flavored fashions for women.

And there is also room for newer, eased-up yet tailored versions that are long on femininity and style.

Sure, the ideas are still stolen from his closet. But this time, the closet may be located in the Middle East of “The Arabian Nights.” Or it might be a sailor’s steamer trunk. Or the country armoire of a slightly dissipated English nobleman. . . .
