Postal salute: Buffalo Grove Park District officials have come up with an unusual way to celebrate their 25 years of existence: a special stamp cancellation available only during a 30-day period that began Friday.
“As a park district, we’re always looking for unique and creative ways to do things. This seemed like a good way to commemorate the event,” said district spokeswoman Janet Nowers. Envelopes canceled with the commemorative stamp could become collectors’ items, according to Postal Customer Service Supervisor Sandy Mrotek of the Buffalo Grove Post Office. “To people who save stamps, this is important. There is only a 30-day period when we will hand cancel with this stamp. After that the stamp will be destroyed. That makes it a collector’s item.”
The cancellation stamp bears a design surrounding the number 25. Above it are the words “Buffalo Grove Park District” and below it “Turning Sterling.”
Envelopes bearing a postage stamp can be mailed in another envelope or dropped off at the Buffalo Grove Post Office for hand cancellation, but they will not be canceled while people wait.
