Restoring Jean-Bertrand Aristide to the presidency of Haiti could cost American taxpayers as much as $1 billion.

President Clinton promises a quick withdrawal, but the Pentagon is planning to have troops on the ground through February 1996.

Researchers for the Defense Budget Project say invading Haiti will cost up to $500 million and supporting a UN peacekeeping force, which will include at least 3,000 Americans, will cost up to $300 million. Americans already have spent $200 million on refugee relief, enforcing sanctions and otherwise dealing with the Haitian junta.
