JACKOPIERCE
Bringing on the Weather (A & M) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
Collectively known as JACKOPIERCE, the Dallas-based duo of Jack O’Neill and Cary Pierce has already sold close to 50,000 copies of their three self-released albums. On their major label debut, “Bringing on the Weather,” the two display both a winning acoustic-based sound and a penchant for finely-etched musical character studies. While the driving “Late Shift” is getting most of the initial airplay, three songs in the album’s middle are perhaps most notable. “Iron John” presents a vivid picture of Pittsburgh’s blue-collar past, while “Anderson’s Luck” shows the human side of war. Best of the bunch is “Jacob,” a portrait of domestic strife through the eyes of a young boy. Musical help is provided by T-Bone Burnett (who produced the album) and the Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench, but it’s O’Neill and Pierce’s unerringly well-crafted songs that makes this album such a delight.
