The child inside many area grownups may get a little jealous when the newest addition to the Park District’s playground roster is finished later this year.

When the brightly colored state-of-the-art equipment is installed, the new Madison Meadows playground will be the largest of the city’s 14 playgrounds, said Dean Bostrom, executive director of the Lombard Park District.

The playground will have separate toddler and youth areas located at opposite ends of its 200-foot length. None of the younger kids’ equipment will be higher than 3 feet, and the older group will have equipment requiring more upper body strength.

“Before kids would be playing tag and the different age groups would be knocking into each other,” Bostrom said. Now they each have their own area and parents can sit in the middle and watch both, he said.

Along with a sandbox, the park will have eight swings, a seesaw and rocking animals.

Each section will have ramped large play units with ladders, slides and tunnels. The units also will have decks with play panels of spelling, number and shape games, along with chimes, mirrors and steering wheels.

The playground will be fully handicap accessible, according to the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Bostrom said.
