The forces behind a planned mid-size Chicago theater for music and dance companies said Thursday they signed a contract to buy a 45,000-square-foot site at Cityfront Center and should close by year’s end. The price was not disclosed.

The Chicago Music and Dance Theater, a group led by area foundations, said construction on the 1,500-seat, $30-million house should begin next year and be completed by spring 1997.
After considering other sites over the years, the group settled last November on the Cityfront site, just north of the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers and east of Columbus Drive.
