Bicyclists who ignore traffic laws will have to pay the price.
Under a new ordinance, bicyclists can be issued a $10 administrative citation if they fail to comply with traffic laws or the village’s edicts regulating bike registration, parking, inspection, operation or equipment.
“In other words, the basic rules of the road apply to bicyclists,” said village attorney Julie Panicali.
This is the first time officers will be able to ticket bicyclists who don’t follow traffic laws, Panicali said.
Any officer, including bicycle patrol and community service officers, has the authority to issue tickets, said acting Village Manager Jerry Sprecher.
If a violator fails to pay a $10 citation within 10 days, the village will increase the fine to $25. If a violator still neglects to pay the fine 10 days later, the village will file a complaint in DuPage County Circuit Court, Panicali said.
