A 39-year-old drifter has been convicted of rape for the second time, this time in connection with the assault on a woman in a Lombard motel room, authorities said Thursday.

Edwin Pirela, who was also convicted of rape in 1988, was found guilty of criminal sexual assault by a jury Wednesday after nine hours of deliberation, said DuPage County Assistant State’s Atty. Rick Kayne.

Pirela beat and raped the 24-year-old woman on Nov. 12, 1993, while he was staying at the Highland Manor Motel in Lombard, Kayne said.

He could face an extended prison term of 6 to 30 years because of his previous conviction, Kayne said.

Pirela was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison for the 1988 rape, which occurred in Kane County, Kayne said.
