The village will add three buses to the Grove Commuter Shuttle routes this fall to help transport students who stay after school to take part in extracurricular activities.

The buses will run from Thursday through Dec. 16 and will operate on modified versions of regular routes through the village’s north, southeast and southwest sectors, including stops at Downers Grove North High School, at 4436 Main St., and Downers Grove South High School, at 1436 Norfolk Ave., said village transportation spokeswoman Georgia Ragland.

Budget constraints forced District 99 board members to cancel activity buses for the high schools. Students who don’t have access to automobiles would be forced to walk to and from school at odd hours, often in the dark, Ragland said.

Students will have to pay the regular commuter fare of $1 per ride, officials said. Sheets of 12 tickets are available at the high schools and at Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave. For route maps and further information, call the Transportation Department at 964-0300, ext. 247.
