The first, and perhaps only, summer of Michael Jordan’s baseball fantasy is coming to a close this week.
But the dream isn’t over.
Jordan probably will play baseball this winter. The White Sox plan to seek a special exemption to include him above their already established six-man limit for the Arizona Fall League-provided, of course, there is an Arizona Fall League.
If the Sox can’t get an exemption, or if the baseball strike forces cancellation of the fall league, Jordan could play in the instructional league or winter ball.
“He wants to play, so let him play this winter. Then after 600 or 700 at-bats, we’ll see where he is,” said Sox General Manager Ron Schueler.
Jordan will finish his first summer at Double-A Birmingham next weekend with about 500 at-bats. Through Sunday afternoon’s game, he was hitting .203 (86 for 424) with 48 walks. He has 17 doubles, one triple, three homers, 49 runs batted in and 30 stolen bases in 48 attempts.
“He’s hit about what I thought he would hit,” Schueler said. “But I didn’t think he would steal 30 bases or get 50 RBIs. That’s incredible for a guy who hasn’t played in 13 years.”
