The Park District is considering a referendum proposal seeking a tax increase to finance a $15 million master plan that would add services and facilities, develop seven new parks, and improve six existing recreation areas.

Development proposals include building an $8 million community center on 40 acres at Apple Orchard Community Park.

The proposed tax increase would cost property owners about 17 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, officials said. At a cost of $34 more per year for Cook County residents and $49 more for DuPage residents, the increase could bring about $1 million annually into Park District coffers, officials said. The current budget is $1.5 million.

It would appear support for the plan is strong. Only one resident out of 15 appearing at a recent hearing opposed the increase, noting that it comes in the wake of Elgin Unit School District 46’s proposition last spring to build more schools.

Commissioners said they will vote Thursday on the referendum plan.
