Two employees of a Hoffman Estates teen center have been fired in the wake of an unauthorized, after-hours party at the site, while authorities said Thursday that they have privately reached a decision on what will happen to the remaining workers.

The two employees, both in their mid-20s and both assistants at the Vogelei Teen Recreation Center for about a year, were dismissed for “unauthorized drinking on Park District premises,” said Ed Haag, executive director of the Hoffman Estates Park District.

The two were among 20 or so people who attended a party at the center, 650 W. Higgins Rd., on July 15 where beer, wine coolers and other alcohol were served. Most of those in attendance were current or former employees and their friends.

The two fired workers were both employed by the Park District, which runs the center in conjunction with the Village of Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg Township.

The township employs the other workers who were in attendance at the party, and the township board reached a decision on their fate in a closed-door meeting Wednesday night.

But since the employees must be notified in writing of the decision, township administrator Larry Weniger refused to reveal results of the meeting.

Weniger did say representatives of the three governing bodies would set up a time to meet next week to discuss the incident and set a date for reopening the center.

“I think the Park District is looking to be reassured that an incident like this does not happen in the future. I know they’re anxious to get the program back up and running,” Weniger said.
