Gene Kelly, the actor and dancer noted for the elegance and athleticism of his dancing, was in stable condition and resting comfortably Sunday after suffering a mild stroke, a UCLA Medical Center spokesman said.

Kelly, 81, best known for the musicals “Singin’ in the Rain” and “An American in Paris,” was admitted to the hospital Saturday afternoon. It was not certain whether he had suffered any permanent disability or when he would be released, the spokesman said.

NEA ANNOUNCES ILLINOIS ARTS GRANTS

The National Endowment for the Arts awarded $775,450 in grants to Illinois organizations and artists in its fiscal third quarter, part of $31.5 million given nationwide by the federal agency in the period. The largest Illinois grant was $157,700 to support the 1994-95 season of Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. The Art Institute of Chicago received two grants totaling $85,000 to support exhibitions on Midwestern industrial design and the art of the Americas. Receiving $30,000 grants were the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, ETA Creative Arts Foundation and the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, all of Chicago.
