Two boys and a firefighter were injured Sunday in a house fire that may have been started by a child playing with matches.

Smoke detectors awoke three children and a woman living in a two-story single-family house at 29W424 Greenbriar Lane just before 3 a.m., said Assistant Chief Tom Fairbanks.

Two of the children, Joshua and Daniel Clinkenbeard, ages 6 and 4, suffered burns on their faces and hands and were treated at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

The boys remained hospitalized in fair condition Sunday night, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Firefighter Curt Savage was overcome by smoke and was treated at Central DuPage and released, officials said.

“I heard the children crying hysterically, and I got up and saw all these lights flashing from the fire vehicles,” said neighbor Dan Jozwiak, 47.

The cause of the blaze was still under investigation, Fairbanks said. Inspectors were examining whether a child accidentally started the fire by playing with matches.
