The Village Board has approved a new sign ordinance to replace “nebulous” laws concerning signs in the village’s commercial areas.
The new rules, approved Tuesday, prohibit plastic signs in the downtown area and urge that signs have a “historic flavor.”
Height limits were placed on signs in the new Randall Road corridor, where a Jewel/Osco and Eagle Food Store recently were built. Also, the new rules prohibit balloons and signs that are portable, aesthetically unpleasing and potentially distracting to motorists.
“It (the new ordinance) levels the playing fields for everyone,” said Michael Friesen, assistant to the village manager.
Businesses have five years to comply with provisions of the new ordinance.
