It was the bottom of the ninth inning. The Cubs were leading by a run, but the Rockies had Charlie Hayes at third base with one out and Dante Bichette coming to the plate.
If ever there was a time for Randy Myers to be in the game, this was it.
But Myers wasn’t even up in the bullpen.
“Myers was unavailable with a stiff shoulder,” said manager Tom Trebelhorn after the Cubs hung on and won.
“I tweaked (the shoulder) in Cincinnati last Saturday in a game where I only had one batter to warm up,” said Myers.
Instead of Myers, Trebelhorn stuck with Jose Bautista for two batters and then gave the ball to Dan Plesac, who got the last out to record his first save since 1992.
New time, place: The “Walk of Fame” ceremonies scheduled for Friday have been moved from the corner of Clark and Addison to inside Wrigley Field at 1:45 p.m. Fans who come to the ballpark will see the marble plaques already embedded into the sidewalk honoring Ryne Sandberg, Don Kessinger, Rick Reuschel, Cap Anson and Stan Hack. Ceremonies to present Sandberg and Kessinger with replicas of their plaques will be held on the field.
