Residents say the intersection of 61st Street and Bentley Avenue is dangerous. Village officials don’t necessarily disagree.
Yet despite pleas and petitions by many residents, the village can’t put a stop sign there, officials said last week.
A traffic study conducted by Metro Transportation Group Inc., shows the intersection, which borders both Willowbrook and Westmont, has less traffic than is legally necessary for the village to erect four-way or even two-way stop signs. The study suggested the existing “yield” signs at the intersection remain unchanged.
But there are a large number of pedestrians in the area, and vehicles regularly break the posted speed limits along 61st, noted Trustee Stephen Landsman. Because these factors are not always measured in traffic counts, the village will study whether it can still erect a more effective sign than the current yield sign, trustees said.
