A 22-month-old girl died Sunday in a hospital from injuries she suffered earlier in the day when her mother’s car was struck in the passenger side while the car, according to witnesses, apparently was traveling through a stop sign.
Lavanya Makayee, of Hoffman Estates, was declared dead at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where she was airlifted after first being taken to Delnor-Community Hospital, Geneva.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office had not ascertained a cause of death Monday, a spokeswoman said.
The Kane County sheriff’s office said the infant was secured in a child safety seat in the car being driven east at about 12:15 a.m. Sunday on Silver Glen Road by her mother, a 28-year-old Hoffman Estates woman.
According to witnesses and the other driver, the mother’s vehicle allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign at Corron Road and was subsequently hit by a northbound vehicle.

Sheriff’s Lt. Ken Ramsey said the cause of the accident is under investigation and no citations have been issued. The accident marks the second death this year in Kane County of an infant in a car seat in a side-impact collision, Ramsey said.
