Simpatico! (Sub Pop) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
Sarah Shannon’s whispy vocals surge to the surface above a syrupy mixture of guitars and bass by this Washington, D.C., quartet. Producer John Porter, a Brit who has worked with the Smiths and Roxy Music, artfully balances the jangly wall of guitars against the singing, a vast improvement from the band’s debut last year, “Copacetic,” in which Shannon’s fragile vocals were drowned by the instrumentals-a halfhearted stab at My Bloody Valentine. Shannon’s voice serves as a crisp counterpoint to the musical fuzziness that is loose in an endearing way, but never sloppy.
