Motorists who use Illinois Highway 64 east of the city will find the going a little slower over the next six weeks, while state contractors repave the four-lane highway.

The work, which was moved up a year on the Illinois Department of Transportation’s construction schedule, will take place between 7th Avenue and Dunham Road, a 1.2-mile stretch. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

“This is one of our winter damage projects,” said Roger Valente, IDOT’s area programmer for Kane and DuPage Counties. “The freeze-thaw cycle last year created a lot of potholes and damage, so consequently we have to do the repaving earlier than we had originally planned.”

The state is paying $526,819 to Wheaton contractor Harry W. Kuhn for the work.

About 64,000 cars a day use Illinois 64 through St. Charles, according to recent local traffic studies. IDOT is planning to rebuild Illinois 64 from 7th Avenue to 14th Street in 1996, including replacing the century-old bridge across the Fox River.
