Officials from the Poplar Creek Library will return to the Zoning Board of Appeals with revised plans for the use of a house they wish to purchase for library space.
The Poplar Creek Library recently entered a contract to purchase a house at 310 Library Lane, adjacent to the library’s rear parking lot.
Library officials said they need the extra space because they are outgrowing the existing building at 1405 S. Park Blvd. because an increasing number of people are using it and the branch at 4300 Audrey Lane in Hanover Park.
After listing 14 conditions for approval, the Zoning Board of Appeals last month still denied a recommendation. In addition, 33 neighborhood residents signed a petition objecting to the house being used for library space.
Zoning board officials reasoned too many changes were needed to make the building suitable for everything the library district wanted.
Some alterations included making the building handicapped accessible, installing fire-resistant walls and sprinkler systems, bringing electrical wiring up to code, and installing speed bumps in the parking lot adjacent to the library.
