Diapers, bottles and lullabies can dull a mom’s reputation. But in Hip Mama, the new quarterly parenting ‘zine, child rearing gets cutting-edge treatment.
“People are tired of reading how to put the kids to bed,” says Ariel Gore, editor and publisher, who loads Hip Mama with essays, commentary and cartoons dedicated to “the multiplicity of mothering experiences.”
Hip Mama grooves on topics such as welfare mothers, single parenthood and staying sane, in short articles-funny and provoking-that allow you “to read a whole piece before being interrupted by whining or song.”
A former teen mother on welfare, the editor, 24, defends parents of her generation to whom the ‘zine is targeted.
“We’ve worked hard to have older moms accepted but not (mothers in their) teens and ’20s.”
