Shawon Dunston’s ailing back and Rey Sanchez’s hamstring injury caused the Cubs to bring up infielder Todd Haney from Triple-A Iowa on Friday.

To make room for Haney, the Cubs optioned pitcher Blaise Ilsley to Iowa. Haney, 28, was batting .292 for Iowa. He played seven games for Montreal at the end of the 1992 season.

Haney got into Friday’s game, pinch-running for Mark Parent in the eighth inning.

“Haney can play second, short and third, in that order,” said manager Tom Trebelhorn. “He’s a very aggressive player who has looked for this opportunity for a long time.”

Dunston excelled Friday with four hits, including his ninth home run. Jose Hernandez took Sanchez’s place at second.

The addition of Haney increased to seven the number of Cubs not on the roster when spring training began. Others are Chuck Crim, Kevin Foster, Mike Maksudian, Dave Otto, Anthony Young and Parent.

Doubling up: The Cubs hit into five double plays Thursday night. But the two double plays they turned Friday gave them a 72-71 edge over opponents for the season for grounding into double plays.

“There’s a tendency every time after grounding into a double play to say, `We should have been hitting-and-running,’ ” said Trebelhorn. “But last night’s double plays were not on hit-and-run situations. This team is going to hit into double plays. We don’t have a lot of speed.”

Charity auction: Wives of Cubs players will hold an auction of sports memorabilia from 11 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. July 23 at Friendly Confines Cafe outside Wrigley Field. Money raised will be donated to Family Rescue and other selected charities committed to issues for women and children.
