The Lake County Board agreed Thursday to join Lake Forest, Highland Park and Highwood at a planning committee to determine future uses for the shuttered former Army base on the shores of Lake Michigan.

The county and the three municipalities that border Ft. Sheridan each will appoint representatives to the committee, which will be charged with developing a comprehensive land-use plan.

The county is part of negotiations among the towns. But the formal coalition approved Thursday by a special meeting of the County Board enables the group to apply for and receive grant money from the federal government, said County Board member Robert Buhai (D-Highland Park).

Lake County, Lake Forest and Highland Park will each be responsible for 30 percent of the committee’s expenses and Highwood, because of its financial hardship, will be asked to pick up 10 percent of costs, according to County Board member Colin McRae (R-Mundelein).
