Turf (Reprise)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
Dublin singer Luka Bloom’s artfully crafted “Turf” brims with rich guitar strumming, overflowing with its generous acoustic licks. While Bloom’s folksy flair springs with talented, competent vocals, things seem a bit flat for the sameness that pops through the disc. “Cold Comfort” opens with the wide-eyed immigrant’s look at New York City, showing that it sometimes takes an outsider to take stock of what insiders take for granted. Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, a Green Linnet label singer for the Irish troupe Altan, joins Bloom on his signature “Sunny Sailor Boy,” a song written by Mike Scott of their compatriots the Waterboys. “Freedom Song” flutters in a hymnal-like mantra before bellowing into a stadium chant.
