Strange Pleasure (Epic) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
After keeping an ultra-low profile since the death of his more celebrated younger brother Stevie Ray at Alpine Valley in 1990, former Fabulous Thunderbirds guitarist Jimmie Vaughan emerges in fine style on his first solo album. The biggest surprise is that Vaughan, silent all those years with the T-Birds, acquits himself more than adequately on lead vocals. Instrumentally, where Stevie Ray was noted for his flashy virtuosity, Jimmie is from the less-is-more style of guitar playing. His bluesy guitar is the glue that holds together such disparate tunes as the infectious rocker “Boom-Bapa-Boom” and the jazzy instrumental “Tilt A Whirl.” “Six Strings Down” is probably the tune that will get the most attention, a stark delta-style blues that pays tribute to Stevie: “Heaven done called another blues stringer back home.”
