The village will lower the speed limit to 25 m.p.h. from 30 m.p.h. in an area where a 14-year-old bicyclist was killed earlier this year, but it will not erect stop signs at the intersection where the accident happened.
More than 100 residents had asked officials to place stop signs at Bolson and Stonewall Drives to slow the often-speeding traffic in the neighborhood. David Larson, 14, was killed there in April when a car hit the bicycle he was riding. Other children have been injured near the intersection, residents said.
Village Council members rejected fellow Commissioner Greg Vogler’s motion to erect a stop sign. But they agreed to lower the speed limit along Bolson, Brunette, Oxnard, Prentiss, and Stonewall Drives and Springside Avenue.
The village also will place “Yield” signs at Bolson and Stonewall and Bolson and Brunette, officials said.
Residents, however, said the move is not a solution. Many promised to give the stop-sign campaign another shot with a larger petition.
“Maybe they don’t want to see petitions, but we have to show them how many of their constituents want this,” a resident said. “They have to represent us.”
