Folks who like to have a cold one with friends in apartment complex parking lots might have to end the practice soon, officials said last week.

Under a new proposal, drinking alcoholic beverages would be prohibited in parking lots at Autumn Grove Apartments, 2100 Prentiss Drive. Village attorney Daniel Blondin also will study whether the proposal can include other apartment complexes in the ban if property owners agree.

The ordinance was crafted after police and firefighters were called to Autumn Grove 40 times in a one-year period, said Police Chief George Graves. A majority of those calls were complaints about people drinking in the parking lots, Graves said. Other calls were likely alcohol-related as well, the chief said.

The village already has experienced some successes with a community policing program begun 18 months ago at Autumn Grove, officials noted. Armed with the proposed ordinance, officers could be even more effective, said Police Officer Jim Christian.

Commissioners are expected to vote on the proposal at a July 11 meeting.
