A 26-year-old North Chicago man was shot to death Sunday while waiting in his vehicle to pick up his estranged wife, officials said.

Carlos A. Rodriguez, of 1732 Sheridan Rd., was waiting for his wife, Consuela, in front of her home shortly after 1 a.m., when he was shot by Miguel D. Gonzales, 27, who had been dating her, according to Waukegan police Sgt. Rich Davis.

According to Davis, Consuela Rodriguez told Gonzales a few weeks ago that she was reconciling with her husband, and Gonzales allegedly became upset. She told police she had not seen him since.

But early Sunday, when Carlos Rodriguez waited in his truck for his wife to pull into the driveway, Gonzales allegedly pulled up in his truck, police said. He allegedly said something, drew a rifle and shot Rodriguez twice, Davis said.

Gonzales allegedly sped off, and Consuela Rodriguez ran over to her husband, saw he had a shoulder wound, and went to call police, Davis said. But as she went into the house, Gonzales allegedly returned and fired three shots into the house and another into Rodriguez, Davis said.

Gonzales was arrested in the 400 block of Grand Avenue a short time later and police allegedly discovered a semi-automatic rifle, Davis said.

Gonzales, of 226 McKinley Ave., was charged with first-degree murder and ordered held in Lake County Jail without bond, Davis said.

Carlos Rodriguez was pronounced dead at 1:55 a.m. in St. Therese Medical Center, Waukegan, said Lake County Coroner Barbara Richardson.
