Legs, Mitzi Kapture’s legs, to be specific, go over big in nursing homes around the country.

“A cashier in a store once told me I sustained her father’s life for six months,” Kapture, the prettier half of the USA Network’s “Silk Stalkings” duo, said recently. “She told me he was in a nursing home and he was in love with my legs. And I’m damn proud.”

There’s no doubt that more than the Geritol set is watching Kapture’s legs, and, ah, the rest of her as well.

Since launching three seasons ago, “Silk Stalkings” has become one of basic cable’s highest-rated programs, and certainly the highest-rated regularly scheduled drama airing on cable. According to Nielsen statistics, more than 2 million homes tune in to “Silk Stalkings” each Sunday at 9 and 10 p.m.

The “Miami Vice”-like show features Kapture as Sgt. Rita Lee Lance and Rob Estes as Sgt. Chris Lorenzo, a cop team assigned the tough task of solving high-profile crimes of passion in trendy Palm Beach, Fla.

Kapture partially attributes the show’s success to its portrayal of a strong woman. “The guys she (Lance) works with respect her,” she explained.

Then, too, she added, there’s no denying it helps that the show is sexy.

“Sex is always good,” she said, flashing a smile.

The show has “jelled” during the last three seasons, and the role of Rita Lee Lance has been “softened,” according to Kapture. The softening was something she had asked for.

“I felt we never got to show a softer side (of Lance),” Kapture said. “I’m getting to show a more vulnerable side. I would also like to have a lot more of her personal life in the show.”

Production for next season gets under way in San Diego this month. As for Lance, Kapture said the producers are planning on working in a romantic interest and perhaps a dog. “I’ve asked for a dog a couple of seasons in a row,” she said. “Last year they gave me fish, so I guess I’m getting closer.”

Like others who have played cops on TV, Kapture has been able to use the role to get out of a speeding ticket. She was lucky: The cop had worked on the “Silk” set a few days earlier and remembered her. “It was really cool,” she said of her good fortune.

Kapture said she doesn’t actively pursue acting projects when “Silk” is on hiatus. Instead, she’d rather continue working on a script she’s writing for a Christmas TV project.

“I don’t want to work just to work,” Kapture said of extracurricular acting.
